Beaver Scouts is where adventure, friendship, and discovery come together. Designed for young people aged 6 to 8 years, Beavers encourages children to explore the world around them, try new activities, and develop confidence in a fun and supportive environment.
As part of Scouts, Beavers help young people build important skills for life through games, teamwork, creativity, outdoor adventures, and trying things they might never have experienced before. Whether it's learning a new skill, earning a badge, making friends, or taking on a challenge, every Beaver is encouraged to do their best and have fun along the way.
What do Beavers get up to?
There is no such thing as a typical Beaver meeting!
Throughout the year, our programme includes a huge variety of activities including:
- Outdoor adventures and nature activities
- Arts, crafts, and creative projects
- Games and team challenges
- Cooking and practical skills
- Community and charity projects
- Science and discovery activities
- Badge work and personal challenges
- Camps, sleepovers, and special events
Every meeting is designed to be engaging, exciting, and age-appropriate, helping young people learn through doing while making lasting memories.
Learning Through Adventure
Beavers are encouraged to be curious, adventurous, and kind. Through our programme, young people develop:
- Confidence and independence
- Teamwork and communication skills
- Problem-solving and resilience
- Respect for others and their community
- A love of the outdoors and new experiences
Most importantly, they do all of this while having fun with friends.
Our Beaver Colony
A group of Beaver Scouts is called a Colony. During meetings, Beavers work together, support one another, and celebrate each other's achievements.
Throughout the year, Beavers have the opportunity to earn badges and awards recognising the skills they've learned, the adventures they've completed, and the progress they've made.
Uniform
After your child's first four weeks, they'll be invited to take part in their Investiture Ceremony, officially becoming a member of 1st Keyham Scout Group.
By this point, we hope they'll have their uniform, which for Beavers consists of:
- A turquoise Beaver Scout sweatshirt
- A 1st Keyham Group scarf
Uniforms can be purchased from:
- Plymouth Scout Shop (located at Blind Man's Wood Scout Headquarters)
- Trutex, Billacombe Road, Plymstock
- The Scout Store online: https://shop.scouts.org.uk/
Group scarves are available directly from the Scout Hall for a one-off cost of £5.
Membership Fees
We offer four weeks free for all new members, giving your child the chance to settle in, make new friends, and discover what Beavers is all about.
After the trial period, membership costs £150 per year, which can be paid as 12 monthly instalments of £12.50 paid through OSM Payments.
As a charity, we work hard to keep our costs as low as possible. These subscriptions help cover hall costs, equipment, insurance, badges, programme resources, activities, and national Scout membership fees.
Parent Portal
We use Online Scout Manager (OSM) to help manage information, events, and communications.
Using the Parent Portal, you can:
- Update your child's personal and medical information
- Track badges and awards
- Respond to invitations for camps, trips, and activities
- Manage membership payments
We recommend keeping your details up to date so that we can contact you if needed and ensure your child gets the most from their Scouting adventure.

Beavers is a fantastic age to build confidence, develop independence, and make lifelong memories. Whether they're exploring the outdoors, learning new skills, working towards badges, or simply having fun with friends, every week brings a new adventure.
