Cubs

Adventures, challenges and personal development for 8 to 10.5 year olds

Cub Scouts is all about growing in confidence, developing independence, and taking on even bigger adventures. For young people aged 8 to 10½, Cubs offers an exciting programme packed with challenges, skills, outdoor activities, and opportunities to make lifelong memories.

At 1st Keyham, we encourage our Cubs to be curious, adventurous, and willing to step outside their comfort zone. Whether they're learning practical skills, exploring the outdoors, helping in the community, or trying something completely new, every activity is designed to help them develop the skills they need for life. Scouts helps young people build confidence, resilience, teamwork, and leadership through fun and adventure.

What do Cubs get up to?

No two meetings are ever the same!

Our programme includes a wide range of activities and experiences including:

  • Camping and outdoor adventures
  • Hiking and navigation
  • Cooking and campfire skills
  • Science and technology activities
  • Games and team challenges
  • Arts, crafts, and creative projects
  • Community and charity work
  • First aid and practical life skills
  • Badge work and personal challenges
  • District events and special activities

We aim to give our Cubs opportunities to learn by doing, develop friendships, and discover new interests along the way.

Building Skills for Life

Cub Scouts are encouraged to challenge themselves and take on increasing responsibility as they prepare for their next step into Scouts.

Through their adventures, Cubs develop:

  • Confidence and independence
  • Teamwork and leadership skills
  • Resilience and problem-solving abilities
  • Communication and decision-making skills
  • Care for others and their community
  • A sense of adventure and curiosity

Most importantly, they learn that trying something new is often the first step towards achieving something amazing.

Our Pack

A group of Cub Scouts is called a Pack.

Within the Pack, young people work together as a team, support one another, and celebrate each other's successes. Throughout the year, Cubs can earn a variety of badges and awards, recognising everything from outdoor skills and community involvement to personal achievements and new experiences.

Uniform

After your child's first four weeks, they'll be invited to take part in their Investiture Ceremony, officially becoming a member of 1st Keyham Scout Group.

By this point, we hope they'll have their uniform, which for Cubs consists of:

  • A green Cub Scout sweashirt
  • A 1st Keyham Group scarft

Uniforms can be purchased from:

  • Plymouth Scout Shop (located at Blind Man's Wood Scout Headquarters)
  • Trutex, Billacombe Road, Plymstock
  • The Scout Store online: https://shop.scouts.org.uk/

Group scarves are available directly from the Scout Hall for a one-off cost of £5.

Membership Fees

We offer four weeks free for all new members, giving your child the opportunity to settle in and experience everything Cubs has to offer.

After the trial period, membership costs £150 per year, which can be paid as 12 monthly instalments of £12.50 through OSM Payments.

As a charity, we work hard to keep our fees affordable while providing a high-quality programme of activities, equipment, badges, insurance, and opportunities for adventure.

Parent Portal

We use Online Scout Manager (OSM) to manage membership information, events, and communications.

Through the Parent Portal, you can:

  • Update personal and medical information
  • Track your child's progress and badges
  • Respond to event and camp invitations
  • Manage membership payments

Keeping your details up to date helps us ensure your child can take part safely in all our activities.
