Scouts

Independence, leadership and skills for life for 10.5 to 14 year olds

Scouts is where young people take their adventures to the next level. For those aged 10½ to 14, Scouts offers exciting opportunities to build independence, develop leadership skills, challenge themselves, and experience unforgettable adventures.

At 1st Keyham, we believe every Scout should have the chance to discover what they're capable of. Whether it's camping under the stars, learning survival skills, tackling a hike, supporting the local community, or leading their own projects, Scouts are encouraged to step outside their comfort zone, embrace new challenges, and grow in confidence.

What do Scouts get up to?

The short answer? Almost anything!

Our Scout programme is shaped around adventure, challenge, and personal development, with activities that may include:

  • Camping and expeditions
  • Hiking and navigation
  • Fire lighting and outdoor cooking
  • Pioneering and practical outdoor skills
  • Archery and target sports
  • First aid and emergency skills
  • Water activities and adventurous activities
  • Community projects and volunteering
  • Team challenges and problem-solving activities
  • Badge work and awards

We encourage Scouts to have a say in what they do, helping them develop responsibility, leadership, and decision-making skills while ensuring the programme remains exciting and relevant to their interests.

Skills for Life

Scouts is about much more than earning badges. Through adventure and challenge, young people develop qualities that will benefit them throughout their lives, including:

  • Confidence and self-belief
  • Leadership and teamwork
  • Resilience and perseverance
  • Independence and responsibility
  • Communication and problem-solving skills
  • Respect for others and the world around them
  • Many of the skills learned in Scouts help prepare young people for school, future careers, and everyday life, all while making new friends and having plenty of fun along the way.

Our Troop

A group of Scouts is called a Troop.

Within the Troop, Scouts work together in small teams known as Patrols, supporting one another and learning valuable teamwork and leadership skills. Older Scouts are often given opportunities to take on additional responsibility, helping younger members and leading activities.

Throughout the year, Scouts can work towards a wide variety of activity badges and challenge awards, culminating in the prestigious Chief Scout's Gold Award.

Uniform

After your child's first four weeks, they'll be invited to take part in their Investiture Ceremony, officially becoming a member of 1st Keyham Scout Group.

By this point, we hope they'll have their uniform, which for Scouts consists of:

  • A teal Scout shirt
  • A 1st Keyham Group scarf

Uniforms can be purchased from:

  • Plymouth Scout Shop (located at Blind Man's Wood Scout Headquarters)
  • Trutex, Billacombe Road, Plymstock
  • The Scout Store online: https://shop.scouts.org.uk/

Group scarves are available directly from the Scout Hall for a one-off cost of £5.

Membership Fees (Subs)

We offer four weeks free for all new members, giving young people the chance to experience Scouts and settle into the Troop before committing.

After the trial period, membership costs £150 per year, which can be paid as 12 monthly instalments of £12.50 through OSM Payments.

As a charity, we work hard to keep our fees affordable while continuing to provide a varied programme, equipment, badges, insurance, and opportunities for adventure.

Parent Portal

We use Online Scout Manager (OSM) to manage membership information, communications, and events.

Through the Parent Portal, you can:

  • Update personal and medical information
  • Track badges and awards
  • Respond to invitations for camps and activities
  • Manage membership payments

Keeping your details up to date helps us ensure your young person can enjoy every adventure safely.

Ready for the Challenge?

Scouts is an age where young people often surprise themselves with what they can achieve. Whether it's completing their first expedition, spending a weekend under canvas, learning lifesaving skills, or simply building friendships that last for years, every Scout has the opportunity to develop confidence, independence, and skills for life.

We'd love to welcome your family to 1st Keyham Scout Troop and help your young person embark on their next great adventure. ⚜️🏕️🌟
